Digital storytelling is a transformative tool that enhances STEM engagement in grade K-12 education. This is because it merges creative expression with cognitive STEM concepts, breaking them down to relatable and simpler narratives (Ijiga O.M. et al).
African Children’s Stories, a podcast produced by EduTab Africa, uses African narratives to enhance STEM education through familiar, relatable tales for learners in grades K-12.
According to Ijiga O.M. et al., educators and policymakers ought to recognise storytelling as a strategic instrument for 21st-century STEM education. Recently, the African Children’s Stories podcast presented their work in storytelling for STEM at the STEMtastic Adventures! Africa 2025, held at CEMASTEA. The presentation highlighted how using relatable story narrations and animations is fostering motivation, active participation, increased curiosity and deeper conceptual understanding for Math and Science.
Imagine a child learning Mathematics through a story about animals in an African environment. For instance, Ni Ngapi, a story narrated by Magdalene Chorongo, takes young learners through Math concepts in a fun and engaging Swahili narrative. In this story, different animals and their features are highlighted, and children are prompted to calculate and add together these features.
“Ikiwa kifaru mmoja ana pembe mbili, vifaru watatu watakua na pembe ngapi?” Is one of the questions asked within the story, accompanied by sound effects and animal sounds.
Using this narrative in the classroom would allow learners to not only understand the concept of addition and multiplication, but also build imagination, listening and comprehension skills.
Additionally, the podcast utilises visual tools that translate narrations into video animations. Granny’s phone is a STEM tale that takes learners through the life of Mmabotse as she teaches her grandmother how to use a digital cellphone. This digital story contains settings, characters, and a plot that are relatable to learners in grades K-12, capturing their attention to learn about digital devices.
The podcast further combines these settings, characters and plot with storytelling features like voice-overs, music, sound effects, images and video clips. Enabled by tools like Scratch and Camtecia, we produce rich stories that contribute to making STEM concepts fun for learning, hence increasing learners’ interest in learning these subjects.
Research by Ijiga O.M. et al. shows that African children’s digital storytelling in STEM fosters heightened motivation, deeper conceptual understanding, and equitable participation across diverse learner populations. This is why we tailor our stories to break down STEM concepts for diverse learners.
